A New Set of Eyes

If you are anything like us, you have a regular routine – things you do nearly every single day that are a habit. Have you looked back while getting ready for work or driving somewhere and not been able to specifically recall making a certain turn or doing a specific task? That is what routine does – it makes us nearly blind to the amazing world around us. And that is the topic today – we want to challenge you to see your world through a new set of eyes!

When we travel someplace unfamiliar, we are often excited about the prospect of seeing sites and doing activities that are different from our usual daily grind – different topography, different weather, mountains, the ocean, even tourist traps! But how many times have you asked a friend or relative that lives in a destination you are going to visit “have you done this?” or “what do you think about this?” or “have you seen this?”, only to be told they have not done or seen that? It is easy to become blind to the wonders that may be only minutes from our own doorsteps!

We live very close to the foothills of eastern Colorado, just minutes from a small, old west town called Golden. Recently, we took a few hours to re-acquaint ourselves with this historic gem, striving to see it as a first-time visitor would. Home to the Colorado School of Mines, Golden is also famous for being the first territorial capital of Colorado back in 1862, is the home to one of the world’s largest and most famous beer companies, contains a number of buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, and is the final resting place of old west hero Buffalo Bill Cody. Oh, and gold was discovered here back in the late 1800s, too, though this is not the origin of the city’s name! Coupled with magnificent scenery, countless hiking trails, and kayaking and fishing on the Clear Creek, which runs through town, this is an incredible place for an afternoon walk.

So, what undiscovered, unremembered or unexplored wonders are waiting for you within 15 minutes of your doorstep? Your feet would love to take you to see them!

Happy Walking!
